This book totally revamped my way of thinking about what is possible in childbirth. Until I read it; well, devoured it, really, I had a pretty fearful view of labor and delivery. Here’s how it happened, in brief. For the full story, I hope you’ll watch my book review here or on YouTube.
After the initial excitement of finding that we were going to have a baby, I started thinking about what that means. To me. To my body.
Western Culture Says Childbirth is Scary Painful
Like I suppose most pregnant mommas living in western culture, that started to freak me out a bit. And why shouldn’t it? My girlfriends were telling me horror stories, and I’m pretty sure every movie I had ever seen with childbirth scenes featured lots of screaming. Know what I mean?
Then I got this book. Jackie Mize tells us if we want to contend for a supernatural childbirth experience, we have to renew our minds. We have to know what God says. We have to know what we believe. We have to understand what is happening. We have to put fear away. Fear= False Evidence About Reality. There’s more good material that helped me a ton. I like this book so much I have given it to several momma friends.
Where Did The Painful Childbirth Idea Come From?
I believe a good bit of our cultural expectations of painful childbirth comes from the Biblical book of Genesis in which God told Eve, “I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labor you will give birth to children….” (Genesis 3:16)
But here’s the thing: for those who are believers in Jesus, the Old Covenant is before the Cross. After the Cross believers live in a New Covenant with God…..and now have the right to come before the creator and ask like little children for a pain free childbirth!
I Have Had Two Pain Free Childbirth Experiences
Both of our daughters were born without labor pain. Both births were intense experiences, and my muscles ached (of course they did…..any muscle aches if it is contracted for hours), and I was plenty tired. But I took no drugs because I didn’t need any. Actually, our second daughter was accidentally born on the bathroom floor, but that’s another story!
As you can tell, I’m pretty happy with this book. If you are a pregnant momma, or know one, I recommend it highly!
