Comparison: The Thief of Joy

I originally recorded this in my car while sitting in my garage ¬†ūüôā

You may be wondering why I’m sitting in my car? I’m sitting in my car because my baby is sleeping. Let’s be honest, when the baby sleeps the house better stay quiet. ¬†Therefore, I’m hiding in my car. I want to talk to you guys about something today that’s been bouncing around in my head since 4:45 a.m. when my baby woke me up. Actually there are two things I want to share

First, I have a friend and I love her to pieces. She has a baby girl who’s about the same age as mine and her baby¬†has been sleeping through the night and taking perfect naps for probably about a month. Don’t get me wrong – my friend worked really hard to get her to this point. I’m really happy for her because I know how important sleep is, but I’ll be honest: I can’t help but compare and wonder why, oh why, isn’t my baby sleeping through the night and taking perfect naps?

This is called¬†comparison and I¬†want to tell you guys,¬†comparison is a thief of joy. It robs us of the joy of our own situations and unique children. ¬†As¬†much as I just want to scream sometimes; my kid, she’s unique! There’s no one else on¬†the planet earth like her and God gave her to¬†me!

So, whenever I get frustrated I try to remember to remind myself that¬†comparison is the thief of joy so that I don’t¬†do it. Mommies, don’t compare. It’s not¬†worth it. It doesn’t accomplish anything¬†and it¬†robs you of the joy of your child.

Second,¬†while I was thinking and praying¬†this morning in¬†my¬†sleep-deprived state, I was reminded¬†that we are given (as mommies) a special grace to do what we need¬†to do. ¬†It’s not always easy. In fact it’s darn¬†hard sometimes! Obviously, as I’m still sitting in my car because I don’t want to wake up my four-month-old. However, I know I’ve been given the grace to do this. So as long as I can get a little sleep with the help of my tribe and family around me, I can do this!

Take a deep breath. If I can do it, you can, too!
