After Baby Comes — My Post Partum Care Basket

Here’s my basket of postpartum items

Today, I am a little less than two weeks away from delivering our sweet girl, and I want to talk with you about the postpartum stash that I have here in this basket that says, “baby things.” It should probably say, “mommy things,” because this is all for me!

After birthing our first daughter, I realized there was a lot that I should’ve done as far as preparing for myself. However, I didn’t really know what to expect and at the end I got a little overwhelmed and I didn’t know what to do. So these are some things that I have learned and have used for myself. This time I’m going to be prepared! When I come home with a brand new baby, I am going to have this stuff ready.

First, from the basket is a container of Tucks wipes. These are going to be really important. You’re going to want to use them. Take them out, set them down there, leave them in. Perfect. Tucks wipes are good.

Postpartum Bath Herbs

I have also ordered Earth Mama Angel Baby postpartum bath herbs. I really like Earth Mama Angel Baby products. I haven’t tried these yet, but I’ve read a lot of really great things about them. I’m pretty excited about giving this a try.

I’ve also bought this sitz bath.  It’s a plastic bowl shaped for the nether regions.  There are tubes that come with it where you can bathe really in depth if you wanted to. You set it on the toilet, put some nice warm water in it and sit.

Ordinary Epsom Salt is pretty helpful for this time.

Add Epsom salts to the sitz bath, and just kind of hang out for a little while and soak. It is glorious. This will be here waiting for me when I get home.  Epson salt can also be used for bathing.  Adding a bunch of Epsom salts in the bath is really helpful. I bought the big bag for that reason.

I’ve definitely bought some pads, like the overnight kind.  Also have a few of the thin ones for when things start to slow down a little bit.

Peri bottles, perineal bottles are gonna be one of your best friends after baby comes.  They are basically spray bottles. You won’t want to wipe when you come home or when you use the restroom….believe me, you’re not going to want to. So, take one of these, fill it with warm water. You basically just rinse off and then very gently blot with a paper towel or washcloth. There’s no wiping. These are nice because it helps you feel like, “Okay, everything’s getting cleaned and washed,” and it definitely helps with feeling a little more fresh, honestly.

I have some lanolin, Medela Tender Care. I use this mostly with my daughter. I also use some of the Earth Mama Angel Baby which I have here in this bag. I have a few Earth Mama Angel Baby products in here. I have the nipple butter which I am excited to use.  Like I said, I mostly use the Medela.  So anyway, this is the nipple butter which I’m going to be using. I’ll probably try this first just because, I really like the Earth Mama Angel Baby products.

I used Mama Bottom Balm last time and it was amazing. It says on the back, “Naturally cooling balm for prenatal hemorrhoids and postpartum soreness.” It’s non-toxic – I can pretty much understand what is in it. I used this last time and loved it and it smells kind of refreshing. Little bit minty, maybe.

Another item is New Mama Bottom Spray. Now, I was a little unsure about this the first time because… spraying something? I wasn’t sure about that but it’s a “naturally cooling perinatal mist for prenatal hemorrhoids and postpartum soreness.” You can either spray this directly on your bits or you can spray it onto a pad and use it that way. It actually has about the same effect either way. I’m probably going to take this to the hospital with me, but it’s here also for me when I get home. Mm. It smells good!

Lily Padz

There’s just a couple of other things here. These are the LilyPadz. These are silicone nursing pads. I have to tell you that these are probably the most amazing nursing pads that I’ve found, because it’s almost like wearing a contact lens that fits directly onto your eye.  The fit feels about the same.

You take the pad, fold it outward, press it on and it adheres really nicely to your breast. That’s great because if there’s a little leakage it actually will hold it there. Not a lot, so don’t go thinking this will save you if you have a lot of letdown or if you’re leaking badly, because it won’t. But for going out it’s a really nice option, so these are pretty amazing. I have a big box of the ultra thin nursing pads, which are the disposable ones that I’ll probably use for sleeping and wearing around the house. I usually use the LilyPadz for when I start to venture out of the house.

I haven’t tried this one yet, so I don’t know much about it or if it’s going to work or not, but I also have postpartum support shapewear. It’s a belt and there are two or three different ways you can wear it.  I remember driving just a few weeks after having my first baby and feeling like my innards were not in the right place. They probably weren’t, and it felt really weird. I talked to a friend about it and she said, “Well, try a postpartum support belt. It kind of helps hold everything in.” So this time around, a sweet friend purchased one for my baby shower and I’m going to give it a try. I’m excited about it.

There are just a few other things I want to tell you about here in my basket. I am keeping the ice diapers that I have made in the freezer for when I need them. Certainly it’s nothing new, but I did do a video on how I made them.  I’ve got about 15 of them, I’ll probably make another batch, just so I have a few more.

I also have made a supply of padsicles. Basically, what I did was put witch hazel on a pad and then smeared some aloe vera gel on it and just folded them all back up. I didn’t do this for my first baby. I’m hopeful that they’ll work out really well.

While reading through websites, I found someone who talked about using ladies’ Depends because as these ice diapers start to melt they get a little drippy. I thought, “Well, I don’t want to make a mess in my bed.” Even though I have prepared for that, I would rather prevent a mess so I purchased some ladies’ Depends.

These are the last things I want to talk about and I hope that you find some of it helpful. If I remember anything else, I will certainly update you guys. Or if something else pops up after her birth that I wished I’d had or that I found really helpful, I’ll definitely let you know as well.

Ok….at this point, I’m feeling pretty confident. I’m glad I have it all here versus having to send my husband out to the store, or wait for an Amazon delivery. Instead of having to wait, we’ll have it all here. I’m feeling pretty good about the postpartum preparations and I hope this helps you, too!!
